Both make a great entry. The difference is how the door carries its weight — and how big that lets it get.
How they work
A hinged door hangs on hinges attached to the side jamb. A pivot door rotates on a pin anchored in the floor and the head of the frame, so the weight is carried from top and bottom.
Size and drama
Hinges limit how heavy and wide a door can be. Pivots can carry much larger, heavier panels — which is why oversized modern entries are almost always pivot doors.
Look
Pivot doors have no visible hinges and swing with a floating, effortless motion. Hinged doors suit traditional styles, double doors and arched iron and steel entries.
Weather and security
Quality pivot doors use perimeter seals, drop seals and multipoint locks. Covered entries help both types in Texas weather.
Installation
Pivot doors need a floor pivot box and proper header support, so plan them early in new construction. Hinged doors are simpler to retrofit.
