The right mix of window types gives you the view, the breeze and a house that looks custom. Here is the vocabulary.
Windows that do not open
- Fixed window — any window that does not open.
- Picture window — a large fixed window framed for a view.
- Direct-set window — glass set straight into the frame with no sash, for the thinnest profile.
- Transom & clerestory — high windows above doors or walls for daylight and privacy.
Windows that open
- Casement — hinged on the side, swings out like a door. Excellent seal and airflow.
- Awning — hinged at the top, swings out from the bottom; vents in light rain.
- Tilt-and-turn — tilts in at the top to vent or swings in fully; great for cleaning and egress.
- Single-hung / double-hung — sashes slide vertically; classic look.
- Sliding (glider) — sashes slide horizontally.
Big-glass systems
- Window wall — stacked and mulled windows from floor to ceiling.
- Curtain wall — a structural glass façade, mostly commercial.
- Corner window — glass meets glass at the corner with no post.
Glass for Texas
Look for Low-E insulated glass with a low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC). On the coast, choose impact-rated (hurricane) windows. See our full range of windows and window walls.
